Blake Lively Relies On Herself For Survival In New Trailer For 'The Shallows'

Could Blake Lively's shark thriller The Shallows be the sleeper movie of the summer? Given how audiences seem to be turning away from blockbusters and sequels, the desire for an original film with a simple survive-or-die premise could be exactly what they're looking for. And if that's the case it will be her second unexpected hit in a row after last year's The Age of Adaline.

What's interesting about the latest trailer is its focus on personal responsibility and self-reliance, heard in voiceover from a 1951 public service announcement. The point? That Lively's character won't just be some damsel in distress trying to survive a shark attack, she'll be actively taking matters into her own hands. Pretty cool.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, The Shallows opens June 29th.
