Steven Spielberg and his Amblin Partners label went back to the director's roots with The BFG, and frankly nobody seemed to care. The adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic (which I thought was excellent, by the way) is looking like Spielberg's first genuine flop in a long time, so it's perhaps no surprise he and Amblin are going back to sci-fi, a genre that has proven reliable for them over the years.
Amblin Partners have picked up Pete Bridges' spec script for The Fall, an alien invasion film about an Atlanta couple fighting to get home to their kids as the attack ensues. There's a reason you're probably scratching your head right now, and it's because the plot is eerily similar to 2005's War of the Worlds, which Spielberg directed.
Doubtful Spielberg will have time to direct this one, though, as he's got Ready Player One next on his laundry list of upcoming projects. That he saw something in The Fall and Bridges' screenplay says a lot, though, so keep an eye out for this one when it gets moving. And hopefully they'll be smart and change the title because there are too many movies with that title already. [Empire]
