Javier Bardem To Play Frankenstein's Monster For Universal's Monster-Verse

Javier Bardem may be one of our most acclaimed actors, winning an Oscar for No Country for Old Men and being nominated for other performances, but he's been known to dabble in the world of blockbusters occasionally. The Skyfall and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales actor has had his interest piqued by another big studio movie, this time Universal's revival of Frankenstein as part of their classic monsters cinematic universe.

According to Variety, Bardem has entered talks to star as Frankenstein, with the expectation he'll appear in another movie first. Currently filming is set to wrap up on The Mummy which stars Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, and Sofia Boutella (see pics of her as the mummy here), so maybe if he signs quickly the character can be added in post? More likely he'll turn up in one of the other monster movies in development, although he'll debut before Universal gets moving on Bride of Frankenstein. Johnny Depp is attached to an Invisible Man film, and rumors are they want Dwayne Johnson for The Wolf Man.

While there are no writers or directors attached to a Frankenstein movie yet, we do know, thanks to Variety's Justin Kroll, that Bardem will be playing the monster not the creator.

Universal clearly is gathering as much star power as possible, and they may need it because nobody seems all that excited about their monster-verse.
