'The Warriors' Is Becoming A TV Series Adapted By The Russo Brothers
"Warriors! Come out and play"! Okay, chances are you're going to be seeing (and probably hearing) that phrase a lot today, because Walter Hill's 1979 gangland classic The Warriors is back in the news in a big way. Deadline reports Marvel's heavy-hitters Joe & Anthony Russo (Captain America: Civil War) are bringing the film to Hulu as a TV series.
The Russos will join with writer Frank Baldwin to develop the series, which is based on the film which was itself an adaptation of Sol Yurick's novel. It takes you into the gritty, pulpy, no-holds-barred world of New York gangs fighting to claim every inch of territory. A charismatic leader calls together all of the rival gangs in a bid to join forces, but is instead murdered, with a gang known as The Warriors blamed for the killing. The story follows their long and deadly trek home through gang turf, fighting the entire way.
Currently the series has no director but that should change soon. Developing The Warriors is a TV series seems like a better approach than a straight-up remake of Hill's iconic movie, and should allow them to go deeper into the brutal New York gang culture, which was maybe half a step removed from Scorsese's Gangs of New York.
