Talk about perfect timing. Last night Rio Olympics coverage was dominated by women athletes kicking ass and winning gold, which made it just the right time for Disney to drop a TV spot for their upcoming animated film, Moana, which finally centers on the teenaged Polynesian heroine.
I say "finally" because much of the promos up to this point have focused on Mau, the demigod voiced by Dwayne Johnson. The most recent teaser was on the cutesy, fun-sized version of Moana. But this one is her as we will see her through most of the movie, older and on a dangerous quest to save her people. Here's the synopsis:
From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho) meets the once-mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity.
Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker and featuring the voices of Auli’i Cravalho, Jemaine Clement, Alan Tudyk, Rachel House, and Nicole Scherzinger with new music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Moana opens November 23rd.
