Despite spinoffs and standalone movies typically falling short of the main saga, there's a good chance Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will break the mold. Already the box office tracking is huge, with some analysts projecting over $120M for the opening weekend, boosted by a huge number of advanced ticket sales. All that said, 'Rogue One' isn't going to get a sequel, and you should already know the reason why.
Because a sequel already exists, and it's titled Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope. Ooooooh right.
But just in case there was any doubt, Lucasfilm head honcho Kathleen Kennedy made it clear there would be no 'Rogue One' sequel, jokingly referring to it as 'Rogue Two' in the latest edition of Empire Magazine. Meanwhile, visual effects wiz John Knoll says the film was always supposed to be a one-shot. Director Gareth Edwards puts a point on it by saying “that sequel will be directed by George Lucas,” referring to 'A New Hope'. See, he gets it.
Does this mean we will have seen the last of the rebels who survive (I'm guessing a lot of them will die) the attempt to steal the Death Star plans? We could very easily see some of them make the jump to latter main-saga films, or perhaps make appearances in other Star Wars books, or maybe even Star Wars Rebels. Who knows? Maybe we'll get a Jyn Erso solo movie at some point. Something tells me there is some pretty big stuff to be revealed about her that can't be contained in a single movie.
