Last night I hosted this season's Coming Attractions Trailer Night event for the DC Film Society, and I told the audience there to expect a lot more movies just like The Great Wall. Mind you, that statement was met with a groan of disapproval. With the box office might China brings to bear, we're seeing more American stars brought over to lead massive Chinese productions with the aim of cleaning up across two continents. We've been seeing this happen over the last few years but The Great Wall takes it to another level. Does that mean the movie will be any good? Eh.
Legendary Pictures, which is now co-owned by Chinese investors and has made a killing on international box office, have dropped an epic 9-minute trailer. And hey, it's at least very colorful which should be expected from a Zhang Yimou (House of Flying Daggers) movie. Basically, the film stars Damon, Willem Dafoe, Pedro Pascal, Jing Tian, and Andy Lau as warriors battling monsters from atop The Great Wall, which was built as humanity's last defense. See, it's like a movie and a history lesson all in one.
The Great Wall opens February 11th 2017.
