A reason Christopher Nolan is considered one of the best, if not the best, modern filmmakers isn't because his movies are always great. I would argue that most of them are but there are a few that aren't so hot. It's because he is willing to go in bold new directions and try things he's never tried before. A backwards-spinning mystery like Memento couldn't be more different than his Bat-trilogy which couldn't be further from the epic sci-fi of Interstellar or Inception. Nolan is once again walking on unfamiliar ground with Dunkirk, his highly anticipated WWII drama that has just debuted a thrilling new trailer.
Shot in 65mm IMAX, everything about this looks so far afield from what we'd expect out of Nolan. Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, and Cillian Murphy join Fionn Whitehead, Aneurin Barnard, Harry Styles, James D’Arcy, Jack Lowden, and Barry Keoghan in the story of Operation Dynamo, in which British and Allied troops were miraculously rescued from the shores of Dunkirk while surrounded by the Germans. It's an incredible story that most don't know about, but they definitely will once Nolan is done with it.
