The Broadcast Film Critics Association, of which I am a loyal voting member, have revealed our nominations for the 2017 Critics Choice Awards. Yeah, it's coming a bit earlier than usual this year but it gives us a chance to honor the year's best movies somewhat ahead of the pack, and this time the most nods have gone to Damien Chazelle's La La Land with an incredible 12 nominations.
The lavish musical found its way into the Best Picture category, along with Best Director for Chazelle, Best Actor for Ryan Gosling, Best Actress for Emma Stone, and two separate nominations for Best Song. Following closely behind with 10 nominations were Barry Jenkins' Moonlight, which is looking more and more like an Oscar favorite, and the sci-fi drama Arrival starring Amy Adams. Both films were included for Best Picture, joined by Hell or High Water, Lion, Manchester by the Sea, Fences, and I think a couple of surprises in Hacksaw Ridge and Sully.
If you're wondering where Martin Scorsese's Silence or Rogue One: A Star Wars Story are...well, they're nowhere. We never got to screen them, and unlike last year when people had a fit because we made an exception for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this time we aren't letting any stragglers in.
And because we're a bit more populist than the Oscars or Golden Globes, the Action Movie category is where you'll find Gal Gadot nominated for Best Actress in an Action Movie for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Deadpool contending for Best Comedy, and so forth.
The Critics Choice Awards will be held on December 11th and broadcast on A&E.
