And the beat goes on for Moonlight. The Los Angeles Film Critics Association revealed its award winners today and Barry Jenkins' film continues to look like one of the two or three top Oscar contenders. The left coast critics honored it with Best Picture while Jenkins won Best Director, to go along with Mahershala Ali for Best Supporting Actor and another for Best Cinematography.
The acting categories came with a couple of pleasant surprises. Adam Driver's soulful performance in Paterson earned him Best Actor, a rare loss for Casey Affleck. I continue to be shocked by the lack of love for Fences, especially for Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. Isabelle Huppert once again won Best Actress for both Elle and Things to Come. I'm curious to see if her vote starts getting split later on. Certain Women standout Lily Gladstone took home an award for Best Supporting Actress, and it's a richly deserved victory. I'm not sure if this translates into more recognition from other guilds but this is a nice surprise.
