Julia Roberts Returns To HBO For 'Today Will Be Different' Limited Series
Still basking in the glow of Big Little Lies' success, HBO has turned to another A-list star to head up a different limited series adaptation. HBO and indie giant Annapurna will team up for Today Will Be Different, which Julia Roberts will produce and star in.
Based on the novel by Maria Semple, a former writer on NBC's Mad About You and Arrested Development, the story follows Eleanor Flood, “who wakes up determined to be her best self, but then life happens. Taking place over a single day, it’s a rollicking portrait of one woman’s fumbling but valiant attempt to navigate the knotty perils and sly grace of modern life." Semple will adapt the screenplay herself, but at this point no directors have been named as the project is officially only in development. However, since HBO won a competitive bidding war to attain the rights they'll definitely move forward.
Roberts' last foray into television was HBO's The Normal Heart, which earned her an Emmy nomination. As for Semple, she's suddenly very popular around Hollywood. Richard Linklater is currently working on an adaptation of her book, Where'd You Go Bernadette.
