Here's What's Up With The X-Men In Fox's 'The Gifted' TV Series

We know that Fox's upcoming series The Gifted, which just debuted a new trailer, is set in the same universe as the X-Men movies. Okay...so where are the X-Men while this family is being chased all over the country because their kids are mutants? Where is Charles Xavier during all of this? Off hanging out with the Starjammers or something?

Showrunner Matt Nix has the answer, of course. If you saw the recent Comic-Con trailer there's a line that says the X-Men are gone. What does that mean, though? Will the show move ahead as if the X-Men simply don't exist? Not at all, according to Nix's comments at the recent TCA. The series will make the disappearance of the X-Men a key part of the show...

“In our world, one of the things we’ll be unpacking is the specific relationship of this group of characters to the X-Men. It’s in the trailer that the X-Men are gone. And that’s not a dodge, like ‘The X-Men are gone and we’re never going to mention them again!’ We’re going to be exploring it. It’s a huge deal to these guys. It’s a huge deal in the world. It’s one of the central mysteries of the show.”

Awwww snap! That means at some point Wolverine is going to show up, pop a claw, and come to the rescue....right? How could it not?  Well, it won't, apparently. Nix basically tells us not to expect any kind of crossovers with the movies...

“There’s a whole sort of historical mythology. There’s not going to be a situation where the television show is driving the movies or the movies are driving the television show, because the mythology that we’re telling specifically avoids that but it doesn’t avoid that by pretending the X-Men don’t exist or there just doing stuff over and no one pays any attention.”

He's already misleading us because if the series deals with the X-Men having vanished, then they are already being pushed by the movies. And really, I don't know how something like this is reconciled on the big screen. Perhaps that's why all of the movies are set so far in the past?

Fox will premiere The Gifted on Monday, October 2nd. [Variety]
