“An earlier version of this story stated that Matt Reeves’ The Batman was part of Warner Bros.’ new label and would star a new actor as Batman, but it is unclear where that project will fall.”
So basically, they don't know what's up with it yet and shouldn't have made such a firm statement one way or another. You know where I lean on this, but what do you think? The original story is below.*
As I've been saying ever since news of an out-of-continuity Joker movie broke, Warner Bros. and DC Films may be doing more harm than good with all of these random spinoffs. Remember how confused audiences were over having two Quicksilvers in the X-Men movies and Marvel's Avengers (I still get questions about it!)? Well that's going to be a lot worse if Ben Affleck plays the Dark Knight in Justice League, and then again in The Batman, which is meant to be a standalone.
Well, one problem solved. THR now says what we've seen coming for a while now, that The Batman won't star Affleck at all.
Matt Reeves’ The Batman, for example, is intended to not be connected to the Justice League universe but to be set in a different time period and star another actor.
Different time period, different actor, which is exactly how things are going to work with Scorsese's '80s-set Joker movie. Again, this has been so damned obvious for a long time that it's annoying people ever thought it would be different. Affleck was so obviously hiding something under that veil of enthusiasm at Comic-Con, and now we know what it was.
That said, this could mean that Affleck will continue on in the Justice League movies but not in any Batman standalones. Ugh, Warner Bros. what are you doing!?
