Saoirse Ronan Is 'Mary Queen Of Scots' In The Royal Drama's First Image

This is turning out to be an active week for new Saoirse Ronan movies.  Coming up she has Greta Gerwig's directorial debut, Lady Bird (first look at that here), and now we've got the debut image from Mary Queen of Scots, with the Oscar-nominated actress looking quite regal.

Directed by Josie Rourke and co-starring Margot Robbie as Queen Elizabeth, the film will explore how these powerful women became “rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a masculine world. The two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence. Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s sovereignty."  Mary was an enigmatic figure, becoming Queen of France by the age of 16 and a widow by 18. She would attempt to reclaim her throne as the Queen of Scotland, only to threaten the sovereignty of Elizabeth, who ruled both Scotland and England.

Production on the film has only just begun, and currently it doesn't have a release date. But we can probably expect to see it during the awards season next year.  Guy Pearce, Joe Alwyn, Jack Lowden, and David Tennant co-star.
