Is there a 'MacGruber 2' on the way?

When Will Forte and Jorma Taccone's MacGruber hit theaters in 2010, it arrived with an incredible amount of hype, like a lot of films based on Saturday Night Live sketches tend to do. And just like the vast majority of those other films, it bombed hard at the box office and critics savaged it mercilessly. Me, I thought it was kinda funny. Stupid beyond belief, but that was what the sketch always was so why would anyone expect different? Even with the miniscule $10M budget, MacGruber couldn't quite break even. Usually, that doesn't bode well for a sequel.

However, the MacGyver knock-off has been something of a cult fave since hitting DVD and Blu-Ray, so much so that the chance of a follow-up isn't out of the question. Forte and Taccone have apparently been kicking around some ideas for a sequel, which the latter kept under wraps while discussing it with Screen Crush...

Taccone: "It would be me, Will and John [Solomon] writing it again. Every time I hang out with Will, we talk about all our cool ideas for the sequel. We have the idea for it and we have a title, but I won’t tell you what it is."

He did spill some small details which MacGruber fans should find pretty cool, in that the story will be set at Christmas time, following in the tradition of other 80s action staples like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon. Taccone also made it clear that MacGruber and his lady, Kristen Wiig's Vicki St. Elmo, won't be having any baby bomb diffusers any time soon. It probably makes sense to not commit to anything involving her character, as Wiig is plenty busy and a much bigger star than she was just two years ago. Then again, this is one of her SNL buds, so she may pull a few strings to make everything work. It's all going to depend on scheduling, and since MacGruber 2 isn't close to being greenlit, this is all just spitballin'. Taccone and Forte both have enough on their plate as is. Forte is set to star in Nebraska, the next film from Alexander Payne. Taccone is developing an adaptation of Duncan Rouleau's comic book, The Great Unknown. [ThePlaylist]
