1st poster for Sam Raimi's 'Oz the Great and Powerful'

Ever wonder what was going on in the land of Oz before Dorothy and her precious dog Toto arrived to stir up trouble? Sam Raimi and Walt Disney want to show us how the great Wizard came to rule in Oz: the Great and Powerful, and if the newly released poster is any indication, we're going to be in for a treat.

James Franco stars as Oscar Diggs, a sketchy small-time magician who somehow gets whisked away to the magical land, where he becomes embroiled in the many problems facing the land of Oz. Not only must he figure out who's good and evil amongst three witches: Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams); but he must also become a better man in the process of transforming himself into the great and powerful wizard. Zach Braff, Joey King, Abigail Spencer, and Bruce Campbell co-star.

Looking like something straight out of Frank L. Baum's story, or Victor Fleming's 1939 classic film, the image's emphasis is clearly to show us how faithful the setting will be rather than focusing on the star-studded cast. You can just catch a glimpse of Oscar and his top hat in the balloon caught in the tornado's grip, but the colors draw your attention to the Emerald City looming in the background. Oz: the Great and Powerful has had a long post-production period, so expect to see some serious special effects when the film opens on March 8th 2013.
