Rumor: Batman to be Older "Grizzled Veteran" in Superman vs. Batman
As if the announcement of a Superman vs. Batman storyline would form the crux of the Man of Steel sequel, Zack Snyder drove the Comic-Con crowd into a fever pitch when he revealed it would be inspired by Frank Miller's 1986 graphic novel, The Dark Knight Returns. The script Snyder is figuring out with writer David Goyer, and possibly meeting Miller about, won't be a direct adaptation but will include elements from the story. Mostly it's assumed that the ideological differences between Batman and Superman will be the driving force, but there may be one more crucial element that Snyder will include.
The generally reliable folks at Batman On Film have "sources" who say that Warner Bros. is looking to cast an older actor for the Batman role, as the character is expected to be in his 40s and a "grizzled veteran who has been on the job" for many years.. The comic book storyline features an older Bruce Wayne who comes out of retirement to save a crime-infested Gotham City, so a decision like this would be closer in keeping with Miller's vision. If true, it would indicate another move by Snyder to get as much distance from Christopher Nolan's trilogy as possible by not casting a younger actor in the role.
In a way this could make sense, bringing in an older actor to help along rising star Henry Cavill, who is still very much finding his footing in the Superman role. But at the same time, it doesn't make as much sense if WB is planning to spin off Batman into his own solo franchise, which we know is their ultimate goal. We'll see if any of this holds up, but assuming it's true, who would you want to see as Batman?
