Here's all most people probably need to know about The Last Five Years: Anna Kendrick sings. The actress has been putting her vocal chops to amazing use since Camp, and Hollywood knows a sure thing when they see and hear it. She helped take Pitch Perfect to the top of the box office and the Billboard charts, she'll probably do the same for Pitch Perfect 2 and this month's Into the Woods. But next year she'll sing her heart out in another musical that many haven't heard of, The Last Five Years, and the first trailer for it has just been released.
Written and directed by Richard LaGravenese (Beautiful Creatures) and based on Jason Robert Brown's stage production, the film has Kendrick starring opposite Jeremy Jordan. The story follows the ups and downs of a young couple's relationship over five years as career and infidelity threaten to tear them apart. You won't find much of a traditional narrative here; it's 100% singing and that may be great for the most die-hard enthusiasts of the genre, but as noted in my review "You better LOVE musicals before even thinking of sitting through The Last Five Years."
The Last Five Years opens next year but does not have a set date.
