Back in the early days of the Sony email hack (which the company is still dealing with, by the way), one of the stories that emerged was that The Lego Movie's Phil Lord and Chris Miller were developing an animated Spider-Man comedy. Nothing was really heard about it since but now that story has proven to be very real with Sony confirming plans for a brand new animated Spider-Man film.
The deal with Lord and Miller, who will produce and write the story treatment, was first announced on Twitter by Sony CEO Tom Rothman while at CinemaCon. The film will hit theaters on July 20th 2018 and exist independently from Spider-Man's live-action adventures in the MCU. Given that Lord and Miller's first breakout hit was Sony's animated Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, maybe we'll see Spidey crossover with that world, instead?
Spider-Man is expected to pop up next in Marvel's Captain America: Civil War in 2016, followed by a solo Spidey film on July 28th 2017.
