Cobie Smulders is Having a Baby in First Trailer for 'Unexpected'

If one thing defined this past Sundance experience for me it was the amount of great lead female performances. Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, Saoirse Ronan in Brooklyn, Margot Robbie in Z for Zachariah, Bel Powley in The Diary of a Teenage Girl, and then there was Cobie Smulders who had a pair of them. She was the best thing about the fitness comedy, Results, but the role that won her the greatest praise was in the indie drama, Unexpected.

Directed and co-written by Kris Swanberg (wife of Drinking Buddies' Joe Swanberg), Unexpected stars Smulders as an inner-city teacher who becomes unexpectedly pregnant and must deal with the ramifications of that. Newcomer Gail Bean has also earned some high marks for her performance as a student who has landed in a similar situation.

It's a film I unfortunately missed, but our own Mae Abdulbaki called it "wonderful and heartfelt" with special praise for Smulders and Bean who she described as "triumphant".

Also starring Anders Holm and Elizabeth McGovern, Unexpected arrives right on time on July 24th.
