About three years ago we first learned of Luc Besson's plans to return to sci-fi with an adaptation of Valerian, the French comic book series created by Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières. We really haven't heard anything about it since, but now the project is finally moving ahead and he's not only tweeted the first promo image, but he's also revealed the film's stars.
Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne will headline Valerian, which Besson will write and direct. The story takes place in the 28th century and follows a human government agent named Valerian, who has grand adventures across space and time alongside Laureline, a peasant girl from the 11th century.
Besson has dabbled in sci-fi from time to time over the course of his career, directing Bruce Willis and Milla Jojovich in The Fifth Element. He also co-wrote the Guy Pearce space thriller/comedy, Lockout. DeHaan and Delevingne have been tied up with other comic book adaptations recently; him as the Green Goblin in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and her in Suicide Squad which is currently filming.
Production begins at the end of the year for a 2017 release. [Deadline]
