If the plot of Antoine Fuqua's boxing drama Southpaw sounds like 8 Mile between the ropes, that may be due to the presence of screenwriter Kurt Sutter. Sure, he's best known for creating Sons of Anarchy but he also wrote Eminem's breakout movie role. So while we probably won't see Jake Gyllenhaal droppin' a battle rap in the film, he'll definitely be dropping opponents with a few right hooks.
A new trailer for Southpaw delivers both physical and emotional body blows, with Gyllnehaal playing a lefty Middleweight champion who seemingly has everything. But when tragedy strikes and he loses it all, including the love of his young daughter, his only way to get it back is to fight.
Also starring Rachel McAdams, 50 Cent, Forest Whitaker, Victor Ortiz, Naomie Harris, and Rita Ora, Southpaw hits the ring on July 24th.
