Sienna Miller's Role Cut from 'Black Mass', Scott Cooper Explains Why

Sienna Miller is a terrific actress who, unfortunately, has been saddled too often with thankless roles as wives or girlfriends. Mississippi Grind, Unfinished Business, American Sniper, Foxcatcher....she deserves better, but she isn't going to get it in Scott Cooper's Whitey Bulger drama, Black Mass, because her role has been totally cut from the film.

Cooper revealed to the Boston Globe that Miller's role as Bulger's girlfriend/co-fugitive Catherine Greigh had been removed, basically because he felt her character's storyline wasn't needed. He did point out that she was "fantastic" opposite star Johnny Depp, though, and that "it came down to narrative choices".  Instead, the film will center on the infamous mobster's time in Boston before he went on the run from the FBI for 16 years with Greigh by his side. Maybe those scenes, which actually sound pretty interesting, will be included in a Blu-Ray release?

Not exactly hurting for star power, Black Mass opens September 18th and co-stars Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, Kevin Bacon, David Harbour, Dakota Johnson, Julianne Nicholson, Adam Scott, Corey Stoll, and Juno Temple.
