Greta Gerwig Joins Natalie Portman in Jackie Kennedy Drama

Greta Gerwig has only occasionally dabbled in studio films, and one that that she took on a few years ago was the rom-com No Strings Attached, which starred Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman.  Now she and Portman will be reunited on a more serious project centered on First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Gerwig has joined Portman in Jackie, a film by Pablo Larrain (No) that will take place in the days following the November 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Also coming aboard the film is Peter Sarsgaard as JFK's brother, Robert, with Gerwig set to play Jackie's aide.

The project has been in the works for a while with Steven Spielberg and Darren Aronofsky attached at various points, with Rachel Weisz once in the role of Jackie Kennedy. Aronofsky is now producing with Noah Oppenheim (The Maze Runner) having written the screenplay.

Filming on Jackie begins later this year. Gerwig was seen earlier this year in the excellent Mistress America, and will star in Todd Solondz's Wiener-Dog next. [Variety]
