'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' Casting Begins; Matthew McConaughey Passes on Villain Role

Marvel struck gold with their "bunch of A-holes" as Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the top-grossing films of 2014. James Gunn is gearing up for the sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but so far there's been nothing on any new additions to the cast, not surprising since the plot has been kept totally under guard. Now that all changes with news of the first new cast member, and one that sadly got away.

First up, Matthew McConaughey apparently turned down a villain role in the film. As who? Well, nobody knows, but it's not completely surprising that he has no interest given how busy he's been with more dramatic material. Plus, if the McConasssiance is going to expand into comic book territory it would probably be in a film where he's the unquestioned lead.  The search for someone to take the role is ongoing and should be filled soon.

On the plus side, French actress Pom Klementieff, last seen in Spike Lee's Oldboy remake, has landed what is expected to be a key role. Once again there's no info on who that could be, but Marvel went on a wide search for the right Asian star for the part. Coincidentally, Oldboy gave Klementieff a chance to work with Marvel colleagues Samuel L. Jackson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Josh Brolin.

Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper will return for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on May 5th 2017.
