It's possible that Mission: Impossible 6 will break new ground in a couple of different ways. Tom Cruise has never seen fit to bring back a director to work with twice, and with the exception of a brief cameo by Michelle Monaghan in Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol he hasn't had a major female lead return. In the case of the former, it's appeared for weeks that Cruise's buddy Christopher McQuarrie would be back behind the camera, and now he's confirmed it in a simple tweet:
Mission: Accepted

McQuarrie will work with Cruise on the story, of course, as well as direct and produce. He's worked with Cruise so many times at this point that he knows what the actor likes. Basically he's going to put Cruise in the best possible situation (and shoot him so he looks tall and stuff) and allow him to flex his action muscles. As for Ferguson, who basically stole Mission: Impossible-Rogue Nation right out from under Cruise, she's probably coming back, too.
At this stage 2017 seems like a good date for the IMF's next mission.
