1. Zootopia- $38M/$201.8M
For the third week in a row, Disney's Zootopia topped the charts, slipping only 25% which is crazy for this length of time. It's worth mentioning because the film is shaping up to be one of Disney's strongest in recent history; not nearly on the level of Frozen, which ended with $1.2B worldwide overall, but at least on the level of Big Hero 6's $657M. Zootopia is already closing in on that one with $591M globally.
2. The Divergent Series: Allegiant (review here)- $29M
The expected biggest film to open this week was Allegiant, the third film in The Divergent Series that Shailene Woodley has never been able to carry greatness. It opened with a mediocre $29M which is significantly lower than Divergent's $54M and Insurgent's $52M just last year. The thing is, both of those were disappointments, as well. The latest sci-fi dystopia featuring pretty teens saving the world quickly fell behind The Maze Runner as the latest genre hit, and never reached the level of The Hunger Games as some expected. Unfortunately, there's nowhere for these movies to go except to finish things up with next year's finale, Ascendant, even though it's virtually guaranteed to underwhelm financially. Perhaps this is the kick in the pants studios need to stop splitting the final book in a trilogy into two movies?
3. Miracles from Heaven (review here)- $15M/$18.5M
Given the strength of faith-based dramas it's no surprise Miracles from Heaven, which comes from the same people behind Heaven is for Real, is the big winner of the week. The film opened on Wednesday and scored a heavenly $18.5M over the 5 days, $15M for the weekend. With Jennifer Garner and Queen Latifah leading the cast it had a bit more star power than these movies generally can afford and it paid off.
