New 'Star Trek' TV Series Title And Starship Revealed!

Let's just say that J.J. Abrams' rebooted Star Trek franchise isn't your bag. Where is a fan of Gene Roddenberry space exploration classic to go? Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) and Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness) have been developing a TV series that may do the trick, and now we know what the show will be titled: Star Trek Discovery.

The title comes from the series' starship, U.S.S. Discovery (NCC-1031), and a new teaser reveals it for the first time. We don't know much about what the show will entail, but Fuller went on to say that the 13-episode first season will be telling one connected story, different for 'Trek' on the small screen. Here's the synopsis:

“The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.”

Casting has only just begin and Fuller, who will serve as showrunner, promises to keep it diverse just as Roddenberry would have liked. David Semel (The Strain) will direct the first episode which will debut on CBS next January before moving to the CBS Access streaming service for the remainder of the season.
