An Update on Beverly Hills Cop 4
It was a few years ago that the first rumors about a 4th installment to the mostly revered franchise from the 1980s were introduced. The series, which helped catapult Eddie Murphy into superstardom, focused on street smart Detroit detective Axel Foley and his pursuit of Beverly Hills criminals. The films were a huge hit financially, although the latter two films were ripped by most people.
Well, it wasn't long ago that Brett Ratner was announced to be helming the proposed 4th film. Eddie Murphy, after waffling a bit, also agreed to return. What else was he gonna do? Retire? We should be so lucky. Judge Reinhold and John Ashton, who I'm guessing they found cleaning pools somewhere, also agreed to reprise their roles as Detectives Rosewood and Taggert.
According to Moviehole, the hope by the studio is that this film will be something of a crossbreed of the more comedic 1st film and the far more gritty and action oriented 2nd film. Hm, why was the 2nd film so different? Oh yeah, a certain Tony Scott was the director. The plan is still set for the film to be fast tracked in time for a possible late 2010 release.
That release date seems a bit early to me. I'd expect it sometime in 2011. probably. I've never been a fan of Beverly Hills Cop. Didn't dig the first movie, loathed the next two. I'm just not a fan of those lame fish out of water comedies. The well runs dry so God damn fast. But you know who LOVES fish out of water gags? Brett Ratner. He's made three Rush Hour movies based on one running fish out of water gag. So in that context is he a perfect fit? Sure. Will this be a movie I want to see? Not on your life, buddy.
