Piranha 3-D sequel already announced

Well that didnt' take long, did it? After opening to a rather dismal $10M this past weekend, you'd think the chances of a Piranha 3-D sequel would be sleeping with the fishes by now. Uh, no. Just factor in that it only cost a little over $20M to produce, and it's not hard to see that they'll more than make back their costs in DVD and cable sales. With sequels being what they are, it's likely that a follow-up will do even bigger business.

Dimension Films must be counting on it, as today they issued a statement announcing plans for a sequel is already underway, with director Alexandre Aja returning. Producer Mark Canton had this to say...

“We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving PIRANHA 3D, but cheering for it. And it’s fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it. We can’t wait to get to work on the sequel.”

Aja has previously said that Thailand, specifically the annual Full Moon Party, could be a possible setting for any Piranha sequels. Whether or not that pans out still remains to be seen as no writer has been officially attached as of yet.
