When news broke that Emma Stone had been cast as the decidedly blonde Gwen Stacy in Marc Webb's Spider-Man film, I speculated that Stacy probably wouldn't survive into the sequels. Why? Because eventually the focus has to turn onto Peter Parker and MJ, the relationship we all know and love(except for Marvel Comics who hate them). Is Spinoff Online's catch in THR's report on the story is to be believed then my guess could turn out to be right. It says...
The casting process reportedly involved looking for actresses for both Gwen and Mary Jane, and Columbia was into Stone — a favorite after starring in the studio’s “Superbad,” “The House Bunny” and “Zombieland” — for both roles. But as the search elongated, it decided to focus on casting Gwen, the more important role.
Sources said Mary Jane will not appear in the first movie, so a Gwen story line could provide an extra dose of gravitas, depending on how closely the studio and filmmakers hew to Marvel Comics lore.
Hewing to "Marvel Comics lore" means that Gwen Stacy would eventually meet an untimely demise at the hands of the Green Goblin in arguably the most iconic scene in Spider-Man comics history. Could Marvel be planning on playing out that entire drama in the very first flick?
Not likely, since THR also states that the plan is to not use Green Goblin at all in order to get distance from the Sam Raimi films. So who would the villain be then? The Lizard? Mysterio? And if there's no Mary Jane, then who the heck were Mia Wasikowska and the other actresses trying out for? As usual more questions arise than answers.
