Could 2014 be the year Benedict Cumberbatch finally walks the red carpet and receives the Oscar many feel he's destined for? Certainly, the actor has accomplished a lot in a relatively short period of time, and has impressed in practically everything he's done, even junk like War Horse(sorry Spielberg fans). All he needs now is that one defining role to put him up there in the category of a Daniel Day-Lewis, and he might get it playing Wikileaks founder Julian Assange in Bill Condon's upcoming film.
Newly titled The Fifth Estate, the first official image from the film has dropped as production kicks into gear. Securing a November 15th 2013 release date that puts it right into the thick of awards season, they've also announced the complete cast, and it's impressive to say the least. Cumberbatch is joined by Daniel Bruhl as Wikileaks co-founder Daniel Domscheit Berg, with Laura Linney, Dan Stevens, Anthony Mackie, Alicia Vikander, Peter Capaldi, Carice van Houten, and David Thewlis all on board. Wow.
The Social Network laid the groundwork for insightful examinations of popular, controversial organizations, so it'll be interesting to see if The Fifth Estate follows much the same model.
