James Franco to direct and star in James Ellroy's 'American Tabloid'

While many may only follow James Franco's more mainstream pursuits, a look at his total body of work shows him to be one of the more prolific and experimental figures in Hollywood. Here at Sundance with two movies nobody is probably ever going to see, Franco took time out to speak with MTV and reveal his next directorial effort. And nope, it doesn't involve him writing more weird Presidential inauguration poems.

Franco will direct and star in an adaptation of American Tabloid, from acclaimed crime novelist James Ellroy. Published in 1995, the story follows law enforcement officers Pete Bondurant, Kemper Boyd and Ward Littell from 1958 through 1963, as they get entangled in the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

The book has been a hot property for awhile, with Bruce Willis and Tom Hanks taking stabs at it in the past. Franco cautions that it's pretty early in the process, so let's see if it ever comes to pass.
