'Argo' takes home Best Director and Best Film at the BAFTA Awards

And the pressure on the Academy Awards continues to mount as Ben Affleck's Argo pulled another sweep today at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards (aka the BAFTA Awards). Affleck was notably left off the Best Director shortlist for the Oscars, but Affleck took home the award tonight, along with wins for Best Film and Best Editing.

Lincoln, which led all with 10 nominations, took home one honor for Daniel Day-Lewis in the Leading Actor category. Tom Hooper's Les Miserables won four awards in all, mostly in minor categories except for Anne Hathaway's victory for Best Supporting Actress. She remains the odds-on favorite to win the same title at the Oscars.

It was another impressive showing for Michael Haneke's Amour, which won two awards. In what may be a sign of things to come,Emmanuelle Riva defeated the likes of Marion Cotillard, Amy Adams, and Jennifer Lawrence for Leading Actress. Quentin Tarantino's controversial Django Unchained also earned two honors, one for Original Screenplay and another for Christoph Waltz's Best Supporting turn as a dentist/bounty hunter.
