Tops at the Box Office: 'Identity Thief' steals biggest debut of 2013
1. Identity Thief- $36.6M
It turns out the harsh reviews from critics didn't hurt Identity Thief one bit. And maybe those nasty remarks by Rex Reed towards Melissa McCarthy led to a few more ticket sales to just to stick it to the old coot. What's more likely the case is that there have been no good comedies so far in 2013, so this was like an oasis in the desert. The film scored the biggest February opening for an R-rated comedy ever, no small deal considering this is usually the time when the genre thrives. For McCarthy, it's a validation of sorts to her recent success, and Bateman maintains his status as a solidly bankable lead.
2. Warm Bodies- $11.5M/$36.6M
Slipping 43% from last week, Jonathan Levine's zombie romance isn't going to break the bank or be the next tween phenom, but considering the middling budgets it's going to do solid enough numbers to have studios wanting a sequel. Just you watch.
3. Side Effects - $10M
Well, here's the double-edged sword of having a twisty psychological thriller like Side Effects. Open Road did a fantastic job of hiding the true nature of Steven Soderbergh's film, which means most people are walking into it totally cold. On the other hand, the ads were ambiguous enough to turn some way. Unfortunately it looks like the latter is what won out, and what we've got is a debut that mostly matches what Soderbergh's Haywire did last year. Honestly, I thought audiences would turn out just to see Soderbergh's swansong, but apparently they'd rather watch Jason Bateman snooze his way through another mediocre comedy.
4. Silver Linings Playbook- $6.9M/$90M
Inching its way to $100M. The Weinsteins have a surefire hit on their hands.
5. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters-$5.75M/$43.8M
6. Mama- $4.3M/$64M
7. Zero Dark Thirty- $4M/$83.6M
8. Argo- $2.5M/$123.7M
9. Django Unchained- $2.3M/$154.5M
10. Bullet to the Head- $2M/$8.1M
