New photos from 'Star Trek Into Darkness', 'Drinking Buddies', and 'Riddick'
While there continue to be plenty of mysteries surrounding exactly what J.J. Abrams has in store for Star Trek Into Darkness, here's one aspect that's not so hidden: Chris Pine is the least interesting actor in every image. Take these two newly released photos, which show him as Captain Kirk with Zachary Quinto as Spock, and the other with Benedict Cumberbatch's villain named John Harrison. Pine's not a bad actor, he's just not all that compelling. We're drawn to Cumberbatch because everybody thinks he's actually playing Khan, while Quinto gets the cool ears and Vulcan death grip. Pine is just...Pine. If that were William Shatner it'd be a totally different story, though. Also starring Simon Pegg, Alice Eve, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, and many more, Star Trek Into Darkness opens in IMAX on May 15th, then everywhere else on May 17th. Considered one of the pioneers of the "Mumblecore" movement of indie films, Joe Swanberg(Hannah Takes the Stairs) appears to be following in the footsteps of the Duplass Brothers by landing bigger stars while maintaining the same aesthetic. His latest comedy, Drinking Buddies, is set in the world of craft beer and stars Anna Kendrick, Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson (Safety Not Guaranteed), Ron Livingston, and Ti West (The Innkeepers). The first image shows Wilde and Johnson, looking like they just spent a late night downing some specialty brew. Look for it to premier next month at SXSW.
After venturing away from the look and feel of sleeper hit Pitch Black with the broader sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick, Vin Diesel and franchise director David Twohy have smartly gone back to the drawing board with the third film. The latest image from Riddick strongly suggests that the world the infamous warrior finds himself stranded on is the same as Pitch Black, which would be pretty awesome. Karl Urban is back as the vengeful Lord Vaako, and he'll be joined by Katee Sackhoff and Dave Bautista. Riddick hits theaters on September 6th. [Facebook]
