Remake of Takashi Miike's 'Audition' On the Way
Considering the number of remakes we get on a regular basis, especially in the horror genre, it's kind of amazing that a classic like Takashi Miike's Audition hasn't been remade once or twice already. I kind of assumed it would happen around during the mid-2000s when we were flooded with J-horror remakes like The Grudge, The Ring, and Dark Water. It may have taken awhile longer but Audition is indeed getting a redo, and sadly Miike isn't involved.
Producer Mario Kassar (Terminator 2, Rambo III) is developing an English-language remake of Audition that will be directed by Richard Gray. Haven't heard of him? Join the club. The film is based on the wild 1997 novel by Ryu Murakami and much like Miike's brutally graphic version there won't be many significant changes to the story. The American film will follow a lonely father named Sam Davis who lives alone with his son after the death of his wife. Convinced by a friend to put out a fake casting call in an effort to find a girlfriend, Sam gets more than he bargained for when he falls in love with a mysterious ballerina, now named Evie Lawrence.
This is probably a bad idea but it is definitely happening so we might as well get used to it. Gray has adapted the script and has eyed a fall start date after he finishes directing Jason Momoa in Sugar Mountain.
