With Marvel now having established The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy as their biggest super-teams, is it time to go ahead and add one more? They've got a ton of release dates lined up through 2019, and while we didn't learn about any of them at Comic-Con like expected, a long-developing property like The Inhumans may be filling one of those slots.
According to Collider, Marvel has received a script by Joe Robert Cole (Amber Lake) for The Inhumans, a film which has been kicking around the studio for years. Rumors of an Inhumans movie surfaced around 2011, right around the same time as a Guardians of the Galaxy film was being talked about, but there has been little movement on it except vague from Kevin Feige about his interest in doing one. Speaking of which, Marvel plans to treat Inhumans the same way the did Guardians of the Galaxy, meaning they will bring on a director who can put his unique spin on what is already weird material.
So what's the big deal with the Inhumans? Quite a lot, actually, and some of it bleeds over into what has been going on with the comics of late. The Inhumans were primitive humans subjected to experiments by the alien Kree to unlock their amazing genetic potential. They succeeded in creating a race of super powerful beings, but when the Kree abandoned them (for reasons not worth going in to) the Inhumans forged their own society on the Moon, led by Black Bolt and his Royal Family. To gain their powers they use a "holy" substance known as the Terrigen Mists.
Because Marvel/Disney no longer hold the film rights to the X-men, those are held by 20th Century Fox, it's been speculated that the Inhumans' strange origin would be a perfect substitute on the screen. It would be a simple thing to have the Inhumans on Earth where they can be feared and hated by normal humans in a similar way as Charles Xaviers' band of mutants. In the comics we've seen Marvel make a concerted effort to cast the Inhumans in a similar societal position as the X-men. It's worth noting that Quicksilver, who will appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, was married to the Inhuman named Crystal in the comics.
And if the Inhumans are definitely the next big thing to hit the cinematic universe, Vin Diesel may be a part of it. He recently took to Facebook and teased a role in the film. Of course, he's done this many times before and knows how to string along his fans. Then again he would make for an impressive Black Bolt
