Meryl Streep and Carey Mulligan want Women's Rights in Teaser for 'Suffragette'

With Ava DuVernay's Selma earning its way into the Best Picture race earlier this year, another historical, star-studded drama about voting rights will be looking to follow in its footsteps. Coinciding with the UK #VotingMatters campaign encouraging more women to vote, the first teaser for Suffragette, which stars Carey Mulligan, Meryl Streep, and Helena Bonham Carter as voting rights activists, has debuted.

Directed by Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane) and penned by Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady), the film chronicles the intense fight on the ground by members of the British women's suffrage movement. Streep plays iconic activist Emmeline Pankhurst, and the film features supporting turns by Brendan Gleeson, Anne-Marie Duff, Ben Whishaw, Samuel West, Romola Garai, and Nathalie Press as militant activist Emily Davison.

For another side of this fight seen from the American point of view, check out HBO's underrated Iron Jawed Angels. This already looks like a film destined for awards recognition, and with an October 23rd U.S. release date it will be fresh in voters' minds.
