Box Office: Avengers: Age of Ultron's' Mighty $187M Debut Ranks Second All-Time
1. Avengers: Age of Ultron (review here)- $187.7M
After Thursday's $27M debut and $84M total through Friday, it was clear Avengers: Age of Ultron's opening weekend would be huge. The question was whether it would be 2012's The Avengers record-breaking $207M. And the answer is...not quite. The sequel's $187.7M ranks as #2 all-time, with Iron Man 3's $174M at #3. Yes, Marvel has the top 3 opening weekends in box office history. Some will see this as a disappointing start but...frankly, that's ridiculous when one also considers the $626M it already has from a worldwide standpoint. Sure, that is still below The Avengers by a slight margin but the point is Marvel is going to have three $1B films in a 3-year span. The haters out there can kick rocks as far as Marvel is concerned, and Warner Bros. has a long way to go before their DC Comics films come close to an achievement like this.
2. The Age of Adaline- $6.2M/$23.4M
Blake Lively's The Age of Adaline did what its titular character can't, namely get a little bit older, and managed to earn $6.2M in its second weekend. That's down 53% but overall this isn't bad for the mature (well it DOES have Harrison Ford) romance drama.
3. Furious 7- $6.1M/$330.5M
4. Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2- $5.5M/$51.1M
5. Home- $3.3M/$158.1M
6. Cinderella- $2.3M/$193.6M
7. Ex Machina- $2.2M/$10.8M
8. Unfriended- $2M/$28.5M
9. The Longest Ride- $1.7M/$33.2M
10. Woman in Gold- $1.6M/$24.5M
In a smaller platform release, Carey Mulligan-led period drama Far from the Madding Crowd (review here) earned $172K in only 10 locations, a solid $17K per site.
