If Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller had his way, this would be your Justice League: Common as Green Lantern, Armie Hammer a Batman, Megan Gale and Hugh Keays-Byrne (both of Mad Max: Fury Road) as Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter, DJ Cotrona as Superman, Jay Baruchel as Maxwell Lord, Zoe Kazan as Iris Allen, Adrien Brody as The Flash, Santiago Cabrera as Aquaman, and Teresa Palmer as Talia Al-Ghul. It might have been cool....maybe, but we'll never know because the film flamed out due to the writer's strike and other creative factors. Warner Bros. decided to go in a different direction, obviously, by relaunching their entire DC movie universe. With Miller red hot right now and a new Justice League coming, interest in the prior attempt has been rekindled enough that a documentary on its failure is in the works.
Ryan Unicomb is an Australian director who has joined with producers Aaron Cater and Steven Caldwell to develop a documentary titled Miller's Justice League Mortal, which will take us through the entire production's process from hopeful beginning to sad end. He hopes to draw upon the recent interest in films like Jodorowsky’s Dune and The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?, two docs that explored high-profile projects that never came to be.
Who knows if this film will ever get off the ground. Independent financing has been secured but Unicomb may turn to crowd-funding at some point, so there's no firm start date or anything like that. Miller's Justice League film was developing right at the time we began this site, so it has always been one of those projects I've taken a keen interest in. If this documentary ever hits the crowd-sourcing stage I'll be pitching in a few bucks. [InsideFilm]
