Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels Body Slam Religion with Faith-Based Drama 'The Resurrection of Gavin Stone'

It was the WWE Backlash PPV in 2006. Vince McMahon was feeling especially ballsy that year. He had faced "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania in a match that was voted the best of the year. The feud saw HBK, who had in real-life turned over a new leaf to become a born again Christian, facing McMahon who was continually challenging his faith. So what did McMahon do to show his ultimate disrespect for Michaels' religious fervor? He booked himself to win in a match against God. Seriously. McMahon and his son Shane battled HBK and a heavenly light meant to represent Him in a tag team match...which the McMahons won. And it's this same guy, Vince McMahon, who now wants to sell faith-based movies to his WWE audience, and he'll have HBK's help in doing it.

Variety reports that WWE Studios will release faith-based drama, The Resurrection of Gavin Stone, which will star HBK, Brett Dalton (Agents of SHIELD), Anjelah Johnson-Reyes (Moms’ Night Out), and D.B. Sweeney (The Cutting Edge). Directed by Dallas Jenkins from a script by Andrea Nasfell, the plot is definitely more of the inspirational sort than WWE Studios films tend to be. Here's the synopsis:

“The Resurrection of Gavin Stone tells the story of a former child star turned washed-up and troubled actor. After receiving a 200-hour community service sentence, Gavin Stone (Brett Dalton), pretends to be a Christian so he can play Jesus in a mega-church Easter production in order to fulfill his hours of service. Along the way, he reconnects with his past and builds upon his faith to discover that his most important role is far away from the shining lights of Hollywood.”

WWE Studios doesn't do inspirational movies often. The last one they attempted was 2011's That's What I Am starring Ed Harris. While no firm release plans were revealed, it's likely the film will be pushed extensively on WWE television and the WWE Network before debuting on multiple platforms, DVD and Blu-Ray. No word yet on if the film features HBK delivering "Sweet Chin Music" to an angel.
