Winona Ryder Confirms She'll Return for a 'Beetlejuice' Sequel
Turns out you can't just say "Beetlejuice" three times and have a sequel appear out of thin air. A sequel to Tim Burton's cult classic has been talked about for years, and various key figures have individually confirmed their desire to be involved if it ever happens. Michael Keaton has said he'd come back as the title character, Winona Ryder has teased a return, and last December it was Burton who said it was "closer than ever" to happening. And now it's Ryder who may have finally given the confirmation fans have been waiting for.
Ryder, who played Lydia Deetz in the 1988 comedy, was a guest on Seth Meyers' show and, inspired by Burton's comments last year, confirmed the film is happening and she will indeed be back...
“I think I can confirm it because Tim Burton did this interview. It was very hush-hush, top secret, ‘I don’t know what may happen, I don’t know,’ and then he was doing some press for ‘Big Eyes’ and he did an on-camera interview and he said, ‘Oh yeah, we’re doing it and Winona’s gonna be in it.’ So can I say…? I mean if he said it. But I really don’t know much more than anybody else.”
Seth Grahame-Smith (Dark Shadows) is co-writing the screenplay with David Katzenberg, and Burton may decide to make it his next film after finishing up Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. While Big Eyes was met with a lot of critical acclaim, Burton hasn't had a box office hit in years and maybe the "ghost with the most" can turn that around.
