SAG Awards 2016: Diversity Rules, But Surprises Are Few

How much of an Academy Awards indicator are the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards? Well, not much, really, but tonight as Hollywood's top stars gathered to honor the best performances of the year, the results largely fell in line with how many expect the Oscars to go. Tom McCarthy's Catholic Church scandal drama Spotlight won Best Ensemble, the awards' equivalent to Best Picture. It's probably an even split between Spotlight and The Big Short as to which one will win at the Oscars, and really there are no other true contenders.

There weren't a lot of surprises on the film side at all, really. Brie Larson won Best Actress for her performance in Room, just as she's likely to do at the Oscars. Leonardo DiCaprio won Best Actor for The Revenant, and Alicia Vikander came out on top for her supporting turn in The Danish Girl. The only real deviation was Idris Elba's Best Supporting Actor win for Beasts of No Nation, for which he wasn't nominated for an Oscar at all. He had a heck of a night, actually, since he also won Best Actor for Luther on the TV side.

Diversity seemed to be the name of the game tonight when one factors in the TV winners such as Orange Is the New Black, Transparent, Viola Davis, and more. But for those who think this was an answer to the #OscarsSoWhite campaign, just know that the SAG voting occurred weeks ago before the Oscar nominations.
