Looks like Steven Spielberg has a new favorite; sorry Tom Hanks. After working with Mark Rylance on Bridge of Spies, leading to the actor winning an Oscar for his performance, and the upcoming children's book adaptation The BFG, Spielberg is set to reteam with him again on a project he's been holding on to for a couple of years.
According to Deadline, Spielberg and Rylance will reunite for The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, based on the book by David Kertzer. Spielberg became attached to it back when he was stockpiling projects in the wake of Robopocalypse being shelved, and now it's finally coming together. Tony Kushner (Lincoln) wrote the film which takes place in 1858 Bologna, where six-year-old Italian Jew Edgarto Mortara is abducted by the church police and taken to Rome to be raised Catholic, eventually becoming a priest. Rylance will play Pope Piux IX, who helped raise the boy despite his parents begging for their son's return.
It's an incredible true story and it will be very interesting to see how this one plays given the sudden surge of faith-based movies. But it could be a while before it hits theaters as Spielberg has Ready Player One to shoot next. And after he's done with 'Mortara', he jumps over to Indiana Jones 5.
