Wizard of Oz "Sequel" to be Directed by Drew Barrymore?
Man, talk about a blast from the past. It's been years since I last heard a peep about Surrender Dorothy, the proposed Wizard of Oz "sequel" that was originally set to star Drew Barrymore. The story poses the question, "What if the wicked witch wasn't really dead"? What if she was faking, and is now alive and well ready to wreck shop all over again?
The project fell into development limbo and was thought dead. Now it appears that Barrymore is keen to revive the film, with herself in the director's chair. It would be her second directorial effort after last year's roller derby comedy, Whip It.
No word on if Barrymore will still star, but it's been nearly ten years. Then again the plot calls for her to play a granddaughter of Dorothy or something, so maybe it's a role she can still fill. I really dug the energy that she brought to Whip It, and I think she's got real potential as a director. Worth keeping an eye on.
