Tyler Perry to write, direct, and star in 'Single Moms Club'

Having just endured Tyler Perry's feeble attempt to be an action hero in Alex Cross, it'll be tough for me to write anything about him without being overly harsh. So why bother? Alex Cross is so bad, so inept that it had me screaming for the cardboard characters and freshly-pulled-from-arse storylines of Perry's typical films, and so we learn he'll go scrambling back to them with Single Moms Club.

In the middle of negotiations that would extend his lucrative first-look distribution deal with Lionsgate, Perry will write, produce, direct, and star in Single Moms Club, "which follows a group of single mothers from different walks of life who are brought together by an incident at their children's school. They bond and create a support group that helps them find comedy in the obstacles of life, as well as their inner strength to overcome their personal challenges." Let me guess: one of these women is poor and saintly, and one is rich and probably a snobby elitist bitch. Maybe Perry can play one of the moms? I bet he really wants to.

Lionsgate would be dumb to let their deal with Perry slip away, as his films have grossed more than $650M worldwide despite all of them essentially being the same, except in some he wears a consignment store dress. I'm curious to see if those same people who see all of Perry's films will turn out to see him do something different in Alex Cross. He just finished wrapping up The Marriage Counselor, which he wrote and directed, and stars Vanessa L. Williams, Jurnee Smollett, Kim Kardashian, and Lance Gross. [Variety]
