Akiva Goldsman To Direct Rob Liefeld's 'Avengelyne' For Paramount

Polarizing comic book artist Rob Liefeld, the guy who created Deadpool, Cable, X-Force, and a bunch of other oversized Marvel heroes in the '90s, has long talked about adapting his comic, Avengelyne, for the big screen. One of the first Comic-Con stories I remember covering was Liefeld and Haywire star Gina Carano's teaming up on the film, going so far as to sign posters featuring her as the fallen angel warrior.

Like a lot of Liefeld's plans, nothing ever came of it. But now Deadline reports Paramount has picked up the rights and placed Akiva Goldsman (Winter's Tale) in the director's seat.  The story refers to it as "John Wick with a fallen angel", which must be music to Liefeld's ears. The comic was pure '90s Liefeld, centering on a fallen angel warrior who battles demons and Satan himself while carrying swords bigger than her body and while wearing as little as possible.  The character became incredibly popular during a time when badly-written characters who killed things indiscriminately were a thing, but not so much nowadays.

Avengelyne isn't a Marvel character so Paramount didn't have to worry about stepping on any toes legally. But if they were hoping any Liefeld character is worth making a movie out of because of Deadpool, they might want to reconsider. Deadpool became most popular AFTER Liefeld was done with him. Just sayin'. All that said, I still hope they keep Carano because she'd be a perfect demon slayer.
